Posted: 05-Jun-2005 [Source: Mobile Tech News]

[Congressman Pete Sessions, R-Texas, has introduced a bill prohibiting municipal governments from offering Wi-Fi if a private telecom offers a "substantially similar" service.]

By Mobile Tech News staff -- Texas representative, Pete Sessions, introduced a bill on the floor of the House he is calling the Preserving Innovation in Telecom Act of 2005. The bill "prohibits municipal governments from offering telecommunications, information, or cable services in any geographic area within the jurisdiction of such government in which a corporation or other private entity that is not affiliated with any State or local government is offering a substantially similar service." The bill, HR 2726, has been referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce for review.

Passage of this bill would make it illegal for any municipal government to build and operate a Wi-Fi network if a private telecom is providing the same or similar service.

Pete Sessions (R) was previously employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and Bell Labs before being elected to the House of Representatives in 1996.
