Global subscriber connections reach 2 billion this week-end
Posted: 18-Sep-2005 [Source: MTN]

[The two billion wireless global subscriber connections number hits its mark this weekend.]

The two billion wireless global subscriber connection landmark will be reached this weekend according to Wireless Intelligence, the venture between Ovum and the GSM Association.

"The total number of mobile connections is now equivalent to nearly a third of the estimated world population of 6.5 billion," says Martin Garner, Director Wireless Intelligence. "And although total connections are higher than the real number of users due to multiple connections, or inactive pre-paid connections, this is still a significant landmark for the industry."

GSM technologies, including W-CDMA, make up 78% of the world market and will reach 1.5 billion global subscribers later this month. Mature cellular markets such as Sweden, Italy, Austria, and the UK have over 100% market penetration rates. The majority of new subscriber growth is coming from less well-developed markets such as China, India, Eastern Europe, Latin America and Africa.

Ovum, the European-based independent research group, forecasts 3 billion wireless subscribers by the end of 2010.
