Metro-scale mesh networks to cover select European city centers

[Tropos Networks partners with The Cloud to deliver expanded WiFi networks to city centers in the UK and Europe.]

Sunnyvale, CA -- Tropos Networks, the proven leader in delivering ubiquitous, metro-scale, Wi-Fi mesh network systems, and The Cloud, the largest hot spot operator in Europe, today announced a collaboration to deliver metro-scale mesh networks to city centers in the UK and Europe. The partnership will deliver broadband wireless networks, with seamless subscriber mobility, expanding The Cloud's already industry-leading Wi-Fi footprint.

The partnership and subsequent technology expansion will allow The Cloud and its customers to deliver innovative mobile broadband applications to customers over large areas. For the first time, service providers operating on The Cloud's infrastructure will be able to deliver metro-scale value-added services such as mobile internet access and wireless voice services, remote wireless video monitoring, automated meter reading (AMR) and multiple public safety applications, among others.

The Cloud's networks are open to any service provider who would like to provide advanced wireless services to their customers. The Tropos MetroMesh architecture allows multiple user communities to operate on a single wireless infrastructure, with each group afforded the opportunity for individual security and authentication settings, bandwidth provisioning and unique network identification.

The collaborative deployments will begin in 2006. Both parties anticipate the adoption of the joint solution to be aggressive, with a number of European projects to be announced during the year.

Deployed in more than 300 customer sites worldwide, Tropos MetroMesh routers quickly and economically use the intelligent Tropos Predictive Wireless Routing Protocol (PWRP) to provide pervasive coverage over metro areas. PWRP forms a wireless mesh, dynamically routing traffic along the highest throughput path to a wired gateway. This intelligent routing negates effects of radio frequency (RF) interference, wired backhaul failure and mesh router failure. PWRP scales to thousands of nodes with the lowest routing overhead in the industry. Network planning, optimization and support costs are minimized via the capabilities of Tropos Control, a purpose-built element management system for MetroMesh networks, Tropos Insight, an advanced MetroMesh analyzer and optimizer, and Tropos Drive, a drive-test appliance to determine coverage and throughput in MetroMesh networks.
