A tip from MTN: Unlocking your GSM-enabled phone
Posted: 19-Mar-2006 [Source: MTN]

[Yes, it is possible to have your tri-band GSM-enabled phone unlocked...read on.]

All handset manufacturers design a set of features into their phones. U.S. carriers decide which of the features on the handsets they sell will be available to the user and which of those features will be locked from use. "Locked" means making certain features inaccessible to the user even though the phone has the capability. An example would be wanting to use a tri-band GSM-enabled phone in Europe.

Using an "unlocked" tri-band phone in Europe makes it possible to buy a pre-paid SIM card in the country you are visiting and continue to purchase minutes as needed in order to phone home. However, U.S. carriers lock this feature making this capability unavailable in Europe. That's the bad news. The good news is you can stop in at your local Cingular store and they will put in a ticket to have your phone unlocked. This process takes several days so be sure you do this well in advance of making your trip out of the country.
