By Jean Whitinger, Mobile Tech News -- The next game changer, the Nintendo 3DS arrives in the U.S. March 27 for $249.99. It comes in Aqua Blue and Cosmo Black and features a 3D gaming experience without the need for special glasses. Nintendo is expecting to ship four million of the units by the end of March. Also, if you have Nintendo points, you won't be able to use them for the 3DS. Nintendo is going to be generating optional prepaid point cards to be used with the 3DS at a later date.
The stereoscopic 3D display using technology called parallax barrier, is located on the upper screen and has an 800x240 pixel resolution. The screen allocates 400 pixels for each eye creating the 3D effect. The bottom LCD touch screen has a resolution of 320x240. Both screens display 16.77 million colors.
A built-in 3D Depth Slider allows you to immediately adjust the intensity of the 3D settings on the Nintendo 3DS system to your liking. The 3D effect can also be turned down completely—all Nintendo 3DS games and applications can be played in 2D.
The system also includes a built-in motion sensor and gyro sensor. These sensors react to the movement of the system--whether moving it up and down, turning it from side to side, etc.-- allowing the Nintendo 3DS games to respond instantly. The 3DS also offers 3D cameras for taking 3D photos. The system includes a 2GB SD memory card. Almost all existing Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSI games can be played on a Nintendo 3DS system in 2D.
Nintendo is also offering StreetPass functionality with the 3DS. This allows the 3DS in Sleep Mode to exchange game data like Mii characters, high scores, and custom characters with other users you pass on the street. The user controls what data to exchange which can include data for multiple games at once. SpotPass is also included which lets users detect Wi-Fi signals.
3D Games Available at Launch include: Pilotwings Resort, Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, nintendogs + cats, Steel Diver, Asphalt 3D, LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars, Madden NFL Football, Pro Evolution Soccer, Ridge Racer 3D, Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D, Bust-A-Move Universe, Super Monkey Ball, Samurai Warrios Chronicles, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Shadow Wars, The Sims 3.
