FCC Chairman Issues 'Gigabit City Challenge'

[The FCC issues a fiber challenge to Internet providers.]

Angela Moscaritolo -- "While ultra-fast gigabit Internet is available in a smattering of communities across the country, chances are it's not yet an option where you live.

In an effort to expand access nationwide, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachoski on Friday issued a "Gigabit City Challenge," calling for all 50 states to have at least one community with gigabit internet by 2015.

At this point, approximately 42 communities in 14 states have access to ultra-high-speed, fiber-based Internet, according to figures from the Fiber to the Home Council cited by the FCC."
