[GoAmerica to bring customers in U.S. and Canada, worldwide access to wireless data services.]
HACKENSACK, N.J -- GoAmerica Communications Corp., a leading nationwide wireless Internet service provider, today announced the availability of North America's first Phone.com Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)-compliant gateway. Customers of U.S. and Canadian mobile phone carriers now have worldwide access to wireless data services, including unified messaging, call management, the Internet, email and corporate intranet applications.
For nearly three years, GoAmerica Communications licensed Phone.com's UP.Link(TM) server in order to provide Hand-Held Device Markup Language (HDML)-based applications to mobile devices. With the emergence of WAP as an open protocol, GoAmerica has WAP-enabled its wireless services and technologies. Today the licensing agreement includes Phone.com's WAP-based UP.Link server in the GoAmerica Wireless Technology Center.
"Mobile phone sales are projected to reach 271 million worldwide by the year 2000," said Andrew Seybold, The Andrew Seybold Group. "By WAP-enabling its Wireless Technology Center, GoAmerica has strategically positioned itself to capture a significant share of the WAP mobile phone space."
"Offering WAP-compliant data services through our Wireless Technology Center broadens our reach to the WAP mobile phone market," said Joe Korb, executive vice president of GoAmerica Communications Corp. "Portal content providers now can leverage significant exposure opportunities on mobile phones, while digital Personal Communications Services (PCS) carriers can capitalize on expanding their customer bases."
