[Hyundai to supply 6 million "Tri-mode phones" to AudioVox.]

Korea -- "Hyundai Electronics Industries said yesterday it has agreed with a U.S. firm to supply mobile handsets worth US$1.2 billion, the single largest contract to be placed by a local phone manufacturer.

"The company will supply 6 million CDMA (code division multiple access)-based devices to AudioVox for two years.

"The contract is expected to boost Hyundai's share in the U.S. mobile phone market to 16 percent this year from the current 7 percent, a company spokesman said.

"The company exported a total of 2.5 million units last year, and expects to the figure to rise to 8 million this year.

"Hyundai's shipments to AudioVox includes "Tri-mode Phone," that is capable of communicating in three modes - analog, digital and PCS (personal communications service). Only two or three companies around the world succeeded in developing such type of terminals, the company said.

"Hyundai's handset exports have been largely low and mid-priced ones, but it plans to shift to high-performance, high-priced products, he said.

"AudioVox, the second largest CDMA phone supplier in the United States, will supply Hyundai products to leading mobile phone companies such as Bell Atlantic Mobile, Air Touch, GTE, USU and MCI. (HJJ)
