The Universal Wireless Communications Consortium (UWCC) is Taking Wireless Beyond the Call with the launch of the TDMA-EDGE brand identity.
UWCC has positioned TDMA-EDGE technology as the leading "next generation" wireless solution. On Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, 1:30 p.m. CST at the CTIA Wireless 2000 Conference in New Orleans, UWCC showed the world its new brand identity.
"This is an exciting time in the wireless community and especially for us at UWCC," said Sheila Mickool, President of UWCC. "We are on the edge of wireless and data convergence and the TDMA-EDGE technology gives our operators and vendors the opportunity to be the leaders in 3G services."
TDMA-EDGE carriers are just coming off record subscriber increases for 1999. TDMA-EDGE is the leading wireless technology in the Western Hemisphere in terms of coverage and subscribers. TDMA-EDGE operators and vendors have built on
the momentum of a record year as demonstrated by UWCC board member company SBC Wireless' announcement to switch to TDMA-EDGE technology for its recently acquired Ameritech properties. "TDMA-EDGE technology gives operators worldwide
the ability to migrate to 3G by evolving from their existing infrastructure. This provides cost effective, simple solutions to consumers worldwide," commented Ms. Mickool.
"We are very enthusiastic about the future of TDMA-EDGE," cited Umesh Amin, Chairman of the UWCC and Director of New Technologies & Planning at AT&T Wireless Services. "We recently developed a framework for implementing our historic
Memorandum of Understanding with the GSM Association which will provide consumers with seamless, one handset roaming worldwide. This interoperability agreement means that when you step off the plane in virtually any population center in the world, you will be able to use your TDMA/GSM multi-technology wireless device. And in the coming years, that will include high-speed
data access as well."
The TDMA-EDGE technology brand represents not only today's second generation enhanced services but also 3G compliant high-speed wireless data and internet access technology to be available anytime anywhere. Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) and Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) take `wireless beyond the call' by providing data speeds up to 384Kbps in a mobile environment.
Also at today's press conference, the UWCC launched its new TDMA-EDGE web site www.tdma-edge.org. Chris Pearson, Vice President of Marketing at UWCC, stated "The new web site is the first stop on the worldwide web for news and educational
information on TDMA-EDGE and the Wireless Intelligent Network (WIN). The first web site executive interview `On The Edge' features Dan Hesse, President & CEO of AT&T Wireless Services, Inc."
The UWCC is a Bellevue, Washington-based international consortium of more than 100 wireless carriers and vendors supporting the TDMA-EDGE & WIN technology standards. TDMA network operators currently serves an estimated 65 million
TDMA and Analog subscribers globally. Board Members of the UWCC include: Alcatel USA, AT&T Wireless Services (USA), BellSouth Cellular Corp. (USA), BCP S.A.
