Inktomi joins wireless fray
Posted: 18-Mar-2000 [Source: ZDNet]

["Internet infrastructure firm Inktomi has expanded into the wireless market, teaming up last week with Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard and Cap Gemini."]

By Arif Mohamed -- "The firms aim to offer products this autumn to help enterprises and service providers develop location-specific mobile services. These will deliver commerce applications and local content, such as directory, hotel and real-time traffic information.

"Inktomi also made an investment in AirFlash, which produces applications for location-based services. AirFlash will integrate Inktomi's Search, Directory and Commerce offerings with its own technology for tracking a user's movements. It will sell the joint solutions to mobile network operators and corporate portals so that they can deliver local personalised content and services to mobile users. AirFlash is in talks with Orange (quote: ORA), said Inktomi.

"The Sun/Netscape alliance and Inktomi will co-develop Inktomi's network cache product, Traffic Server, for Sun's iForce wireless infrastructure solution. This will allow service providers to deliver wireless commerce, communication and content services, and also integrate their Internet and wireless services.
