eBay to go wireless in Europe
Posted: 27-Apr-2000 [Source: CNet/Reuters]

[European WAP users will soon be able to carry out auction bidding will on the go once eBay fires up its servers.]

Berlin -- "eBay's European sites will be able to accept bids placed via Web access point (WAP), standard short message services and other cellular phone platforms by the third quarter, marketed under the slogan "eBay Anywhere," international senior vice president Steve Westly said.

"Users will be able to bid from wherever they are over standard cellular phones and WAP-capable phones," he said after announcing the company's European results, adding that he expected revenues to rise with the greater convenience cellular phone services offered.

"He said the group's national units in Europe--eBay Germany and eBay UK--would lead the pack in cooperation with mobile phone firms including Finland's Nokia.

"As eBay continues its growth drive through Europe, Westly said it would also offer cellular phone-based services in France, Italy and Scandinavia after the company establishes sites in those markets.
