[Fujitsu and Alcatel form new company to focus on 3G systems with the goal of capturing 20% market share.]

By Michiyo Nakamoto in Tokyo and David Owen in Paris -- "Japan's Fujitsu and Alcatel, the French telecommunications equipment group, are forming a joint venture in mobile phone communications systems in an attempt to strengthen their position in markets for third-generation phones.

"The new company, to be 66 per cent owned by Alcatel with Fujitsu taking the remainder, will be based in France and will target Europe and GSM markets in Asia. It aims to have a 3G system ready for deployment in the first half of 2001.

"The tie-up highlights growing competition among equipment suppliers ahead of the 3G change.
