China manufacturer launches first domestic WAP phone

[China's first domestic manufacturer ramps up production of a WAP-enabled handset as mobile phone sales in China continue to explode.]

"China's first domestically-produced Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) mobile phone handset has been launched by Guangdong-based TCL Mobile Communications, AFP quotes the Shanghai Securities News as reporting on Wednesday.

"As the Internet and mobile phone industry explode in China, use of WAP-enabled mobile phones is expected to boom, but to date it is foreign telecommunications firms that are surging into the new market.

"Motorola, Nokia, Ericsson and Siemens have already introduced or are planning to launch such phones in the Chinese market, the paper said.
