Posted: 16-Jun-2000 [Source: Mael Business Newspaper]

[LGIC and Ericsson cooperate in the development of asynchronous IMT-2000 systems.]

Seoul -- "LG Information & Communications Ltd. reported on June 12 that it has agreed to team up with Ericsson Korea Ltd. to jointly develop IMT-2000 equipment.

"LGIC President Suh Pyung-won met with Janos Fugedi, president of Ericsson Korea, for the cooperative business tie-up.

"Under the agreement with Sweden-based Ericsson, the LG unit is expected to focus on asynchronous IMT-2000 system, unlike Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. which insists that the domestic market should adopt the synchronous IMT-2000 system with the help of U.S.-based Qualcomm Inc.

"As a result, competition for control of the domestic IMT market is expected to grow tense between the two Korean firms, according to market sources familiar with the issue.
