DoCoMo's i-mode stumbles over own success
Posted: 08-Aug-2000 [Source: FT]

[More growing pains with NTT DoCoMo this week as subscribers push the servers to their limits.]

By Maija Pesola -- "NTT DoCoMo's position as the leading operator in Japan's growing mobile phone market was confirmed by industry figures on Tuesday, but a four-hour crash of a main server on the same day indicated that the company's rapid expansion may also have its pitfalls.

"The main server for NTT DoCoMo's popular i-mode service, which allows users to send e-mail and surf the internet, was down for four hours early on Tuesday, making internet connections difficult throughout the country.

"I-mode has experienced a series of service failures throughout the year because servers cannot handle the large numbers of users logging on at peak times. User numbers recently rose beyond the 10m level.

"In April - when subscriber numbers were still at about 6m - the company said it needed to increase server capacity, and said it would consider curbing sales and advertising to cut down on the overloading.
