Australia drags its feet on 3G
Posted: 24-Nov-2000 [Source: Financial Times]

[Spectrum allowed to any one bidder may be limited.]

by Shawn Donnan, Sydney -- "The Australian government on Thursday said it would set strict rules for next year's auction of third-generation, or 3G, mobile spectrum to ensure adequate competition in the local 3G market.

"The comments on auction rules are the latest chapter in the auction's protracted - and at times turbulent - runup. The auctions were originally expected to start in January 2001. However, the Australian government has become increasingly coy about the timetable as much-anticipated auctions in Europe have been shrouded in disappointment and scandal.
