San Diego, Calif. -- Kyocera Wireless Corp. (NYSE:KYO - news) today announced the Kyocera QCP(TM) 6035 Smartphone, a powerful yet lightweight wireless handset that unites voice communications, text messaging, e-mail and multiple methods of Web access with the power of a Palm OS(r)-based organizer.

Commercial availability of the Kyocera Smartphone is expected in the first quarter of 2001.

The sleek, elegant Smartphone is a trimode Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless phone, operating on CDMA PCS (1900 MHz), CDMA cellular (800 MHz) and analog cellular networks. The Smartphone offers many enhanced features, including a built-in speakerphone, voice-activated dialing and a convenient jog-dial for accessing phone settings, contact information and call history. With the Palm OS v3.5 and 8 MB of memory, the Smartphone incorporates the complete functionality of the latest Palm(TM) organizers and supports thousands of applications written for the Palm OS platform.

"The Kyocera Smartphone combines the most advanced wireless technology with the most user-friendly features," said Masahiro Inoue, president and CEO of Kyocera Wireless Corp. "By integrating a wireless phone with a Palm organizer, Kyocera has created a phone that is customizable to a vast range of business and consumer purposes, yet is elegantly simple to use."

The Kyocera Smartphone measures approximately 5.59 in. x 2.60 in. x 0.86 in. (14.2 cm. x 6.6 cm. x 2.2 cm.) and weighs 7.35 ounces (208 grams). A user-replaceable lithium ion battery provides up to 4.5 hours of talk time and up to 110 hours of standby time in CDMA digital mode.

The Kyocera Smartphone supports HTML browsers with Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption to provide security for confidential data, making the Smartphone a robust platform for m-commerce and enterprise information management. The Smartphone also supports Web Clipping applications and WAP browsers. All three methods use CDMA wireless data services for Web access. In addition, users can access corporate or personal e-mail accounts using the integrated Eudora(r) e-mail application. The Smartphone also acts as a wireless modem to provide data/fax capabilities for personal computers via the charging cradle or optional serial cable.

Kyocera Smartphone users can choose either the speakerphone or a headset connected to the universal earphone jack to make simultaneous use of the phone and PDA functions. The convenient jog dial on the left side of the phone provides easy access to contacts, call history, phone settings, messages and voice memos. The Smartphone features voice-activated dialing and Speed Dial, as well as 15 audible ringer types plus a silent, vibrating alert. A unique SmartSound feature automatically adjusts the earpiece volume during a call based on surrounding noise levels. The Smartphone also incorporates Text Telephony (TTY) capability for hearing-impaired users.

With the keypad open, the Smartphone displays the familiar Palm applications launcher, with additional Smart Keys(TM) for the Address Book, Date Book, Memo Pad and To-Do List. The convenient Tap 'n' Dial feature allows automatic dialing of contact numbers from the Address Book. HotSync(r) technology allows users to synchronize information between the Smartphone and a personal computer. The Smartphone also features an infrared (IR) data port at the top of the phone for rapid beaming of information to other IR-enabled devices.
