[Is WAP analagous to a "pager on steroids"? Scott Mace offers some interesting views on the future of wireless. ]

by Scott Mace -- "Next year marks my 20th year covering high technology. Back in 1981, serious computation was done by mainframes and minicomputers. Most phone service (at least in the U.S.) was carried by AT&T, although its breakup was imminent. Most TV and radio was carried by a handful of major networks, although cable TV was beginning to flex its muscles.

"Ever since then, the story has been about technology and communications being dispersed further and further. The Internet of 1981 is now vastly larger than its creators could have imagined -- even further, if you consider that, as a network of networks, it is not just made up of TCP/IP networks, but also of any other network attached to it. (IP purists will quibble with me here -- get over it.)

"To think that any trend we see in 2000 is going to lead to a recentralization of computing or communications power is going against all the history in this industry that I've been privileged to witness. Which brings me back to Wireless Application Protocol (WAP).
