GSM North America (GSMNA), the North American Regional Interest Group of the GSM Association, today announced that Robert L. Brown has been elected chairman of the group. Brown succeeds Powertel Vice President Jim Murrell.
GSMNA, one of the Association's nine regional interest groups located around the world, represents North American positions on issues and standards facing the worldwide body of Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) operators. In addition, GSMNA promotes, facilitates and supports the development and evolution of GSM in the United States and Canada.
In addition to assuming his new duties, Brown will continue to serve in his current position, which he has held the past four years, as North American GSM Alliance LLC Executive Director, Secretary and Treasurer.
" Bob has played a pivotal role in contributing to the commercial interests of the members of the GSM Alliance. In addition to administering the daily operations of the Alliance, he has helped to drive the GSM success that has grown across North America and helped to spread the North American roaming and growth message nationally and worldwide," said Murrell. "His unanimous election demonstrates the highest respect and regard that North American GSM executives have for Bob."
Prior to joining the GSM Alliance, Brown was President & CEO of a computer software development company specializing in corporate multimedia applications. Earlier at the Telaction Corporation, he was Vice President-Business Development introducing the first interactive electronic mall and information service in the United States.
Previously, Brown served in a variety of senior national positions in the consumer products industry.
"As part of the GSM Global Network, the world's fastest-growing digital wireless technology, I am committed to make certain that the customers of our member companies are able to use their wireless service where ever they want -- at home, across town, or around the world," Brown said. "Jim Murrell is to be congratulated for his excellent performance as chairman. On behalf of GSM North America, I extend our appreciation and thanks to him for all of his achievements and hard work."
