Here Comes DoCoMo USA
Posted: 05-Feb-2001 [Source: Forbes]

[Some new products on the horizon are bound to provide DoCoMo with some interesting competition when it enters the US market.]

by John C. Dvorak -- "If competition wasn't manic enough for the beleaguered cell phone industry, NTT DoCoMo's anticipated entry in the U.S. market within 12 to 18 months won't help.

"Critics of the U.S. cellular industry continuously point to NTT DoCoMo's (NYSE: NTT - news) i-mode phone as the prime example of how far behind the U.S. market is compared to others. The DoCoMo phone might be one of the most successful consumer electronics products ever released in Japan, and it is just a matter of time before it is unleashed on the U.S. market.

"By acquiring a 16% stake in AT&T Wireless (NYSE: AWE - news) in November, NTT DoCoMo is assured of one entry point to introduce the i-mode phone. The company, with a market cap that hovers around $200 billion, is looking to buy other entry points in the U.S and elsewhere.
