[Korean government focusing on technology development in efforts to be the world's top CDMA country targeting $35 billion in exports for 2005.]

The government plans to foster the CDMA (code division multiple access) mobile-phone industry as a key export sector by 2005 along with the semiconductor industry, officials said yesterday.

Information and Communication Minister Yang Seung-taik reported the plan to President Kim Dae-jung while briefing about the results of Korean companies' bidding for rights to supply CDMA equipment to China last Saturday.

At the meeting, President Kim said that the wireless telecom industry has grown into an information infrastructure surpassing the wire sector, and asked the ministry to make aggressive efforts to widen the overseas market.

Then, Minister Yang reported that the government will concentrate on technology development to make Korea the world's top CDMA country, possessing brands more powerful than Nokia and Lucent Technologies and achieve the goal of $35 billion in exports by 2005.
