[Debitel enters agreement with Deutsche Telecom to market DT's UMTS services.]

by Bertrand Benoit, Frankfurt -- "Deutsche Telekom, the German telecommunications group, and Swisscom, the Swiss carrier, on Monday unveiled an agreement allowing Debitel, Swisscom's German mobile unit, to market DT's third-generation, or UMTS, services.

"News of the agreement comes ahead of a June 5 press conference by RegTP, the German telecoms regulator, that should set the rules for co-operation between UMTS licence holders in building and using their networks.

"The smallest of the six German licence holders, which each paid about E8.4bn ($7.4bn) for licences, could save between 20 and 40 per cent on the cost of building networks depending on the extent of co-operation allowed by the regulator.
