RIM Eyes Handset Market for Its Wireless Devices
Posted: 13-Jun-2001 [Source: Reuters via Yahoo]

[RIM will work with Java handset manufacturers according to CEO.]

Ottawa -- "Research In Motion Ltd. said on Tuesday that it makes sense to link up with leading cell phone handset manufacturers to develop sophisticated wireless devices that run on a common computer language.

"RIM chairman and co-chief executive Jim Balsillie told Reuters in an interview that his company will work with handset manufacturers developing phones using Java, an Internet-friendly programming language that allows programs to run on different devices and operating systems.

"We'll collaborate with them because Blackberry is a Java app (application) -- it's ported to Java. They make Java cell phones, and we're an app that runs on a third-party's Java phone. Why not?'' Balsillie said by telephone, referring to RIM's Blackberry pager.

"Blackberry, which competes with many Palm devices, is a wireless device used for scheduling, contact lists, e-mail, and to surf the Internet.

"Analysts have speculated that RIM will work in combination with handset makers, but RIM had not publicly said it is considering the market for its Blackberry device.

"Balsillie said handset manufacturers Motorola Inc., Nokia, and NTT DoCoMo Inc. have been the strongest supporters of Java technology to date.
