AOLi Service to Help NTT DoCoMo Expand into Overseas Markets
Posted: 23-Jul-2001 [Source: Nikkei]

[Improved versions of AOLi expected to allow users to play a video game on a handset and then resume play on a PC.]

by Junpei Furuhata -- "The AOLi service offered by NTT DoCoMo Inc. and DoCoMo AOL Inc., a joint venture launched in December 2000 by NTT DoCoMo and AOL-Time Warner Inc., is expected to give NTT DoCoMo a boost in expanding its businesses in the world market.

"NTT DoCoMo, which owns 42 percent of DoCoMo AOL as the largest shareholder, and DoCoMo AOL launched the joint e-mail service on June 1, as the first major attempt to demonstrate the global strategic alliance of NTT DoCoMo and AOL-Time Warner. The alliance was established in September 2000.

"In the AOLi service, customers are given a single e-mail address that can be used for both a cellular phone and a PC. This means that if users of "i-mode," known as NTT's Internet access platform for mobile phones, becomes a subscriber for the AOLi, they can read e-mails forwarded to a given single e-mail address through either a cellular phone or a PC.
