Samsung sees 2002 cellphone market of 410 mln units

[The world's fifth largest mobile handset manufacturer casts its predictions for next year.]

London -- "South Korea's Samsung Electronics said on Monday it expects 410 million cellphones to be shipped worldwide in 2002, up from some 390 million units produced this year by the global mobile phone industry.

"The world's number five cellphone maker made the forecast during a conference call after publishing its third quarter results earlier on Monday.

"The number is at the low end of expectations. Share prices of mobile phone makers suggest stronger growth, said analyst Jamie Wood at JP Morgan in London.

"However, we have to be careful. Vendors have consistently set their estimates too high in recent years when the market was booming, and there's a risk their forecasts for next year will be too low now that the market is slowing," he added.
