Posted: 15-Jan-2002 [Source: FT]

[Handspring's Treo, using the Palm OS, will be launched in Europe by the end of the first quarter initially using MMO2's GSM networks. ]

by Gautam Malkani, London -- "MMO2, the former mobile phone division of British Telecommunications, is on Tuesday expected to reveal a tie-up with Handspring, the second-largest manufacturer of hand-held computers, to launch the California-based company's wireless devices over its networks.

"The agreement marks the stepping up of the UK company's efforts to steal a march on rivals as the industry continues to try to marry phones with personal organisers and data devices.

"MMO2 is to distribute and market Handspring's Treo. The device is expected to be launched in Europe on MMO2's networks in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and Ireland by the end of the first quarter.

"The tie-up comes on the heels of its agreement to develop the O2xda mobile data product with Microsoft and distribute the popular Blackberry e-mail device developed by Canada's Research in Motion.
