Alcatel back in the 3G race
Posted: 16-Jan-2002 [Source: FT]

[After formation of a successful joint venture with Fujitsu of Japan, Alcatel is now looking to expand its UMTS market share in Europe.]

by Raphael Minder, Paris -- Alcatel, the French telecommunications equipment maker, believes in the fable of the hare and the tortoise, at least when it comes to third-generation mobile phone networks.

Having fallen behind in the race for orders from European operators preparing to launch Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) services, Alcatel argues it has made sufficient technological headway to make a fresh challenge.

Much of its optimism is derived from its recent experience in Japan, the most advanced market for UMTS. Following an unsatisfactory alliance with Motorola of the US, Alcatel formed a joint venture with Fujitsu in September 2000. Siemens of Germany has also tapped into Japanese UMTS know-how, joining forces with NEC.
