[Maui looking to have wireless Internet this summer.]
"It's fast, portable, affordable, and it's coming to Maui this summer, according to Pacific Business News. What is it? It is a palm-sized, go-anywhere wireless modem that will give Maui residents access to one of the nation's first 3G, or "third-generation" -- broadband Internet services.
Maui Sky Fiber LCC, a startup based at the Maui Research and Technology Park, plans to launch its 3G network and begin selling portable modems in June, Managing Director Steve Berkoff told Pacific Business News. The company has six investors that will put up a total of $3 million by the end of the year, Berkoff added.
Maui will be first in the nation to deploy 3G broadband technology in the commercial market, Berkoff continued. The service and accompanying wireless modem will give users Internet speeds comparable to those offered by AOL/Time Warner's Road Runner or through digital-subscriber lines, at near-dial-up prices, Berkoff added.
The modem is the size of a Palm Pilot and will plug into a desktop computer, laptop, office or home network. The device will provide an instant high-speed Internet connection, Berkoff continued. "You buy the modem, go online to register and activate it and have instant high-speed connection to the Internet," he added. "There's no need to schedule an installation and wait for somebody to show up."
