"The European Union (news - web sites) has offered to discuss mobile phone radiation emission standards with China before the threatened implementation of the world's toughest health rules, E.U. Ambassador to China Klaus Ebermann said Friday.China is currently drafting new health standards on mobile phone radiation which could potentially ban most imported hand sets and force local producers to upgrade their domestic models as well as base stations.
Ebermann said the issue was raised with China 's authorities during a visit in mid-April to Beijing and Shanghai by E.U. enterprise commissioner Erkki Liikanen.
While he stressed that the E.U. isn't forcing China to adopt its standard, Ebermann said Europe could assist and advise on shaping a regulatory framework which is compatible with international consumer safety rules.
Ebermann pointed out consumers in Europe are also concerned about safety issues, but the China standards appear to go beyond anything adopted internationally."
