Beijing -- QUALCOMM Incorporated, pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, congratulates China Unicom on the carrier's successful launch of its CDMA2000 1X nationwide network on March 28, 2003.

"We congratulate China Unicom on the formal launch of CDMA2000 1X and for upgrading its network in record time," said Dr. Irwin Mark Jacobs, chairman and CEO of QUALCOMM. "With CDMA2000 1X, China Unicom can offer its customers cost-effective, advanced voice and data wireless services, delivered by a wide range of feature-rich devices and applications. We look forward to an exciting year of CDMA development in China."

"It is QUALCOMM's belief that China Unicom's launch of CDMA2000 1X, coupled with the advantages of BREW and gpsOne, will bring China Unicom even greater success and enable them to grow their subscriber base significantly," said Jing Wang, senior vice president of QUALCOMM and chairman of QUALCOMM China. "We look forward to working with China Unicom to enhance our relationship and continue our cooperation on GSM1x, new data services and next-generation technology."

Unicom's launch of CDMA2000 1X follows commercial deployments by 39 operators in 21 countries across Asia Pacific, Australia, Eastern Europe and the Americas. CDMA2000 1X operators are experiencing increased average revenue per user (ARPU) in data-related services, support from an expanded base of device manufacturers and myriad applications from an increasing number of content developers. QUALCOMM supports CDMA2000 1X with chipsets and system software solutions.
