QUALCOMM Incorporated, pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced the conclusion of a very successful - over sold - third annual BREW 2003 Developers Conference in San Diego, April 28-30, 2003. The conference provided industry professionals from around the world with three days of networking and learning opportunities, filled with valuable discussions and expert insights on QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless(r) (BREW) platform.
"Our focus for BREW 2003 was how wireless industry leaders can continue to make money with the BREW solution - not whether they can," said Peggy Johnson, president, QUALCOMM Internet Services. "With eight operator partners - ALLTEL, China Unicom, KDDI, KTF, Telstra, Verizon Wireless, VIVO and U.S. Cellular - deploying BREW-enabled services, publishers and developers are truly excited about participating in a real, global marketplace for BREW applications."
Many companies made important announcements and hosted press conferences at the BREW 2003 Developers Conference to discuss their latest BREW applications, services and successes, including:
* Verizon Wireless announced that in just six months consumers have downloaded 8.5 million Get It NowSM games, ring tones, entertainment applications and more. The company also announced it has sold more than 3.2 million handsets to date and expects to sell more than eight million BREW-enabled handsets by the end of 2003, and that the company is seeing an average incremental revenue per active Get It Now user of more than $7.50 monthly, not including additional airtime revenues.
* esmertec demonstrated the world's first implementation of MIDP 2.0 functionality with its Mobile Foundation Java(r) virtual machine (JVM) as an extension to the BREW platform.
* Rocket Mobile demonstrated the industry's first Multimedia Messaging Services (MMS) message exchange between CDMA and GSM/GPRS networks with its RocketMMS(r) client, and also unveiled RocketMMS Extension, which enables BREW developers to create applications that take advantage of MMS technologies.
* Walt Disney Internet Group announced that it is adding Disney, ABCNEWS.com and Movies.com to its BREW-enabled content line-up and also expanding its library of ESPN- and X Games-branded BREW titles.
* Sorrent announced that Yao Ming Basketball by Sorrent will be introduced exclusively for the BREW platform and initially available only to China Unicom subscribers.
* JAMDAT Mobile announced its new titles for the BREW platform and touted its success with the BREW solution, including 2.2 million downloads of the company's BREW-enabled applications.
* U.S. Cellular announced its plans to launch BREW-based services in Knoxville, Tenn., in May 2003, and to roll out across its other CDMA 1XRTT (CDMA2000) markets this year.
* Midwest Wireless announced the signing of a definitive agreement with QUALCOMM to deliver BREW-enabled services to its subscribers beginning in the third quarter of 2003.
In his introductory remarks to the BREW 2003 Developers Conference, Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, group president, QUALCOMM Wireless & Internet Group, highlighted the global success of the BREW solution. "BREW operators are realizing higher average revenue per user, and BREW developers are getting checks," said Jacobs. "Their financial success, which strongly validates the wireless Internet business case, is due to a combination of great applications, and BREW, the only platform that provides an effortless porting process for handset manufacturers, accelerated time to market for wireless operators, and most importantly, a user-friendly wireless application shopping experience."
In the first keynote of the conference, Dr. Irwin Mark Jacobs, chairman and chief executive officer of QUALCOMM, discussed CDMA adoption, the evolution of wireless devices and BREW as a solution for the entire value chain. "Voice was the first 'killer app,' but now, data and applications based on BREW are key to increasing average revenue per user and to making wireless devices more useful and more fun, to more and more users," said Jacobs.
Executive speakers from BREW operators included Dr. William Weicong Li, general manager-marketing for China Unicom; Dr. Yasuhiko Ito, senior executive managing officer, Business Solutions for KDDI; Roger Sole, director of wireless data for VIVO; Philip Junker, executive vice president of marketing for ALLTEL; and Jim Straight, vice president of data and wireless Internet services for Verizon Wireless. In his general session presentation, Sole reiterated Dr. Paul Jacobs' conference opening remarks about the openness of the BREW solution. "BREW is a quantum leap for the wireless industry and will be considered the open standard for developing wireless data," said Sole.
Peggy Johnson presented Stuart Platt, executive producer, THQ Wireless, with a giant ceremonial check during her opening remarks on day two of the conference. The check represented the first payment to THQ as a result of the company's development efforts for the BREW platform. "BREW is real and there is good money to be made," said Platt.
Executives from 17 partner companies participated in the conference breakout sessions, including spokespeople from Blue Heat Games, Centerscore, Comverse Technology Inc., esmertec, Faith West Inc., generationPIX Inc., HI Corp., IBM, LocatioNet, NAVITIME, NSTL, Reaxion, Rocket Mobile, Sony Online Entertainment, Tourmaline Networks Inc., TruVideo Inc. and Vindigo.
Christopher Ambrosio, director of wireless device strategies for Strategy Analytics, delivered a presentation on the growth of CDMA and BREW - providing statistical reinforcement to the speeches from Dr. Irwin Jacobs and Dr. Paul Jacobs, which emphasized how consumers are flocking to sophisticated mobile devices for useful and compelling wireless data experiences. With the growing acceptance of the BREW solution and the burgeoning demand for desirable BREW-enabled handsets, Ambrosio predicted, "There will be more than 25 million BREW devices worldwide by the end of 2003, and more than 500 million BREW devices by 2008."

Deployments of the BREW solution continue as operators throughout the world join Verizon Wireless, ALLTEL and U.S. Cellular in the United States, KTF in South Korea, KDDI in Japan, China Unicom, VIVO (the joint venture between Telefonica Moviles and Portugal Telecom) in Brazil and Telstra in Australia, in commercializing BREW-based services. More than 50 BREW-enabled handset models have been offered to consumers worldwide and more than 40 device manufacturers have indicated their interest in the BREW platform.
