Intel Acquires Oregonian startup Mobilian Posted: 08-Nov-2003 [Source: The Oregonian] [Mobilion, developer of TrueRadio chip supporting simultaneous operation of 802.11b and Bluetooth, reported to haave been acquired by Intel.] by Ted Sickinger -- "Continuing a push to cut computer users' cords, Intel said Friday that it has snapped up Mobilian, a Hillsboro startup that spent the past four years developing an innovative wireless communications technology. The companies did not disclose terms of the cash transaction, which closed Oct. 31. But they said "a majority" of Mobilian's 70 employees in Hillsboro and Del Mar, Calif., will have jobs working within Intel's wireless networking group, based in Hillsboro. Privately held Mobilian was founded in 1999 and raised more than $70 million in venture capital. The company's claim to fame was developing a chipset combining two wireless communication technologies that operate in the same frequency -- Bluetooth and Wi-Fi -- while avoiding radio interference. Bluetooth is shorter range but consumes less power, while Wi-Fi, or 802.11, gives broader range and is being widely adopted as a wireless networking technology around the world." More...
