Royal Philips Electronics unveiled the world's first complete Philips solution for consumer camera phones. Integrating a Philips Nexperia(tm) mobile image processor, the new Nexperia Mobile Display Module is a compact, plug-and-play display solution for camera phones.
According to a study by the ARC Group (Analyses Research Consultancy), more than 130 million camera phone handsets will be shipped worldwide by 2005, increasing to 210 million by 2008. The Nexperia Display Module's high performance, low-cost camera display solution fulfills the needs of this burgeoning market by providing the best front-of-screen performance, optimized camera/display settings, real-time JPEG encoding, and digital zoom in a compact 36mm x 41mm x 5.4mm package.

The Nexperia Display Module optimizes the design and reduces the overall power consumption of a cellular phone in standby mode by approximately 20 to 30 percent. It includes a Philips Nexperia RAM-less Mobile Image Processor (PNX4000) and a Philips single-chip thin-film transistor (TFT) color display driver (PCF8881). The Nexperia Display Module's driving scheme includes a number of innovations, including Dot-inversion, common voltage modulation and interlacing schemes, adding up to the best front-of-screen performance in the industry with low power consumption, and extending battery life by two to four percent for handset users.
The Nexperia Mobile Display Module contains all camera data processing and has one single interface to the base band processor. It is easy to integrate into the overall mobile phone system and provides optimal camera/display performance. Featuring the Nexperia Mobile Image Processor (PNX4000), a highly integrated circuit (IC) dedicated to mobile imaging, the module provides the imaging functions necessary to enable multimedia message service (MMS) on a wide range of mobile phones. The Philips single-chip TFT color display driver reduces power consumption by five to 10 percent compared to competing solutions, and offers the industry's lowest external part count.
