3G Christmas not expected until 2005
Posted: 08-Nov-2004 [Source:]

[3G handsets not expected to be in great demand in Europe this Holiday Season due to shortages, spotty coverage areas and lack of carrier interoperability reports]

By Madeleine Acey, London -- "It looks like there won't be much 3G under the tree this year in Britain.

Rather, wireless phone companies and handset-makers who hoped for strong holiday demand for their 3G phones likely will be as disappointed as a child visited by the Grinch, industry officials and analysts say.

That's because a slower-than-expected rollout of new wireless networks, limited handset availability and technical glitches will depress sales of products that use so-called third-generation, or 3G, technology.

Instead, consumers will be loading up on phones that use older, more reliable technology, according to Britain's largest mobile phone retailer.

"Christmas 2004 will be a '2G Christmas,'" said Roger Taylor, chief financial officer of Carphone Warehouse (CPWCPW)."
