NTT DoCoMo Develops Common Software Platform for 3G FOMA Handsets
Posted: 19-Nov-2004 [Source: NTT DoCoMo]

[DoCoMo offers new common software platform compatible with both Linux and Symbian operating systems reducing complexity and time to market design development of services and functions on the next-generation of FOMA devices.]

NTT DoCoMo, Inc. announced that the company has developed a common software platform for 3G FOMA(R) handsets. DoCoMo will license the platform to handset vendors, aiming to support the development of high-quality FOMA devices with improved time-to-market and cost-effectiveness.

The development of software for mobile handsets has become increasingly time consuming due to the introduction of highly sophisticated services and functions. In response, DoCoMo will offer manufacturers a common software platform to support their development of distinctive application software and thereby differentiate their products.

The development platform is compatible with both the Linux and Symbian operating systems. The Linux version was jointly developed with NEC Corporation and Panasonic Mobile Communications, and the Symbian version was jointly developed with Fujitsu Corporation.

The platform consists of the following:

1) Middleware for common services and functions

2) Customized modules of the operating system

3)Sample device drivers

4) Sample application software, including scheduler, image viewer, etc.

5) Handset emulator software for PCs

6) Documentation, including development guidelines for applications/drivers, platform user's guide, etc.

Some models of the new 901i series, as well as other FOMA handsets to be released in this second half of fiscal 2004, are developed based on the common platform.
