SKY MobileMedia, Inc., a leading provider of applications software platforms for the wireless industry, today announced the integration of SKY's flagship SKY-MAP(TM) mobile applications software platform with the Linux operating system. In collaboration with MontaVista Software, the combination of SKY's fully integrated and standards-compliant SKY-MAP platform paired with MontaVista(R) Linux Consumer Electronics Edition provides phone manufacturers with a complete applications software platform for multimedia handsets and smartphones. SKY will begin offering SKY-MAP for Linux handsets in March.

With the rapid market growth of wireless multimedia devices and smartphones, Linux is becoming the operating platform of choice for handset manufacturers requiring a robust and high-performance operating system. The pairing of SKY-MAP atop MontaVista Linux produces a true multimedia handset software solution - leveraging the inherent benefits of MontaVista Linux with SKY-MAP's standards-compliant wireless services middleware, pre-integrated SKY-APPS(TM) mobile applications suite, and fully flexible SKY-UI(TM) user interface framework. This complete mobile software solution enables handset manufacturers and wireless operators to rapidly develop and deploy highly differentiated and feature-rich handsets and services, reducing time-to-market and increasing handset sales and services ARPU.

"As SKY-MAP builds market momentum for use in high-volume feature phones, our OEM customers, many of whom are migrating to Linux for higher performance products, desire a single pre-validated applications software platform for use across their entire handset portfolio," stated Richard Sfeir, president and CEO of SKY.

SKY-MAP has been designed from the ground-up for complete flexibility and scalability, providing handset OEMs and ODMs, as well as wireless operators, with a common software platform for use across an entire handset portfolio - from low-end handsets, to compelling feature-phones, to high-end multimedia terminals and smartphones. With the addition of Linux support, SKY-MAP can now address additional segments of high-performance handsets and smartphones, providing manufacturers with a single consistent platform as they migrate their phone designs to new multimedia-capable hardware architectures. The use of the SKY-MAP platform and applications suite across all handset segments ensures that OEMs and ODMs can maximize software re-use during engineering development, thus reducing required engineering development time and speeding time-to-market for new products.
