[Monta Vista's Linux CGE 5.0 announces compliance with the Linux Foundation's Carrier Grade Linux 4.0 specs.]

Santa Clara, CA -- MontaVista® Software, Inc., the leader in embedded Linux® commercialization, today announced that its Linux Carrier Grade Edition (CGE) 5.0 has registered compliance with the Linux Foundation’s Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) 4.0 specification, has earned Linux Standard Base (LSB) 3.0 certification, and is Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) logo certified. This achievement makes MontaVista the only Linux distribution in the world to comply with the three key requirements issued by the industry’s major standards bodies, demonstrating that MontaVista Linux CGE interoperates with industry software and hardware, and meets the rigorous demands of today’s carrier infrastructures.

“As the provider of the world’s most widely deployed carrier grade Linux, MontaVista is committed to supplying network equipment providers (NEPs) with the highest quality operating system. Our compliance and certification is another demonstration of our leadership in upholding the standards set by the Linux community by providing superior Linux solutions to our customers,” said Dan Cauchy, senior director of market development, carrier and mobile platforms, MontaVista Software.

“The CGL specification is a set of standards designed to ensure a consistent Linux platform that meets the stringent demands of today’s network equipment providers. MontaVista is an important contributing member of the Linux community, and with its LSB 3.0 certification and CGL 4.0 compliance, MontaVista has shown its commitment to upholding community standards,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux.

When a company purchases a Linux operating system registered with the CGL 4.0 specification, the company is ensured of receiving all features deemed mandatory by NEPs and telecom carriers. To conform to the CGL 4.0 specification, MontaVista CGE 5.0 met all of the 129 Priority 1 requirements mandated by the Carrier Grade Workgroup of the Linux Foundation. Full Priority 1 conformance must meet requirements in seven areas, including availability, clustering, serviceability, performance, standards compliance, hardware support, and security. In addition, MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition became the first carrier grade software to be certified by the Linux Foundation as being in compliance with Linux Standard Base (LSB) 3.0, which ensures interoperability between applications and the MontaVista Linux operating system. Furthermore, MontaVista Linux CGE is the only Carrier Grade Linux that is certified by the IPv6 Forum as being ready for IPv6, the successor to the current version of the Internet Protocol.

“This three-way compliance is another proof of MontaVista’s commitment to the Linux community and is evidence of MontaVista’s continuing commitment to the specific carrier grade requirements of its telecom customers,” said Paul Steinberg, chairman of the SCOPE Alliance. The nonprofit SCOPE Alliance is an association of leading network equipment providers to promote the availability and interoperability of open carrier grade base platforms based on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) building blocks. SCOPE is a program of the IEEE Industry Standards and Technology Organization. “MontaVista’s focus on meeting these standards is very important, furthering the vision of the SCOPE Alliance,” Mr. Steinberg concluded.

"Carrier grade" is a term for software and hardware products that support public telecommunications and data communications networks. Carrier grade products require extremely high degrees of reliability, scalability, and performance to provide an uninterrupted flow of the enormous volume of high-bandwidth data and voice needed for today's multimedia communications. MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition 5.0 is the most widely deployed carrier grade Linux solution in the world, and is used by seven of the top eight network equipment providers (NEPs) including Alcatel-Lucent, Motorola, NEC, and others.
