Nokia to deploy Maemo OS in future smartphones
Posted: 11-Aug-2009 [Source: Mobile Tech News]

[Financial Times Deutschland reports Nokia set to replace Symbian in future smartphones with Maemo OS software.]

MTN -- The Financial Times Deutschland reports Nokia is throwing out the operating system they have utilized in their smartphones for over a decade stating Symbian is unable to keep up with Apple and RIM. The story goes on to report that Nokia is planning on outfitting many of its top end smartphones with Maemo, a free licensed software which the Finns have been utilizing in their pocket computer and Internet tablet products. Soon Mameo will no longer be a niche OS for Nokia, as the company in the next few weeks will presumably bring the first Maemo-based smartphones to market.

"Symbian is much too unwieldly to keep up with modern operating systems," according to the FTD source adding "We must react."

Nokia company officials refused comment on Monday stating, "We do not comment on speculation."

It was a year ago that Nokia acquired UK based Symbian, Ltd. paying 264 million Euro. In April the mobile phone supplier brought out their new OS based on the Linux operating system which is supported by thousands of volunteer developers.
